PETTY: Nothing’s Fair!
Written by: Kyle Petty
Daytona Beach, Fl

Kyle Petty "There is nothing fair about bringing 60 cars to the racetrack and twenty of them racing or not racing and sending people home. Sending the Wood brothers home for the fiftieth anniversary is not fair, and I will go to my grave saying that. The system that we have, the problem is we have the duals, the 125s, 150s whatever, it's an antiquated system, it’s an old system, that’s the way it used to when you brought hundreds of cars to Daytona and that’s the way NASCAR used to weed out people. You're not weeding out teams anymore these are all strong teams. I’m sorry some run faster than others, and some run slower, but that is the qualifying system. If you believe the Daytona News Journal the reason they want to run the duel is because they made a hundred million dollars Thursday. That’s to the bottom line that is what qualifying is all about”.

John Roberts "I don’t think the drivers get it."

Kyle Petty “We don’t get it, its very hard, especially since we've implemented the top 35, and that has created a problem. It used to be fourteen out of one, fourteen out of the other, and the front row, that made thirty then
you went back to the guys that raced their way in, then you went back to points then back to qualifying, and as complicated as that system seemed, it was a very simplistic system. The problem now is come Sunday afternoon, we not only lock in the front row, we lock in three guys on speed, you lock in a past champions so everyone else comes down here racing for four positions, four positions out of those duels will put people in the race. That is where Boris Said had a problem, but I'm going to say this, John Andretti is a prime example of somebody who drove the wheels off of a car and got a car in the race against all the odds in the garage area. We look at all the other teams that didn't make it in, and I feel bad for all those teams, and I feel bad for the way things worked out, but at the same time you got to give kudos to those guys who do make it into those top four and John Andretti was one of those guys."

John Roberts “This system was developed before the top thirty five in owner points. It made a big twist in this whole thing that’s why you got such a small window of opportunity to make the biggest race of the season. It can make or break somebody's season."
